FAMS assisting the development of sustainable agriculture in Malawi.

FAMS Air & Sea Malawi has finalized the delivery of a large consignment of Project Equipment for fish farming company LM Aquaculture. This project was carried out in the township of Salima in Malawi on the 17th of April. By providing this logistics solution, FAMS has aided in the goal of generating a sustainable resource for the region.

FAMS is a freight forwarding company known for its exceptional customer service, attention to detail, and commitment to delivering goods on time and in good condition. With our offices strategically located across sub-Saharan Africa, FAMS is always well placed to provide fast and quality logistics services. The efficient operation carried out by our Malawi office, located in Lilongwe, is a testament to this.

The Crisis

The staple food of Malawi is fish, providing up to 70% of the protein in a Malawian diet. Of this diet, the Chambo fish makes up the majority. However, due to unregulated overfishing, and a surge in population growth over the past 30 years, Malawi is now facing a resource crisis. A 2004 study conducted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimated that the population of Chambo had declined by 70 percent over the previous 10 years.

This is where FAMS stepped in, in partnership with Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) and LM Aquaculture.

The FAMS solution

FAMS worked to move a fleet of containers, each measuring 7x40 feet, from the country of Denmark, all the way to the door of the Lake Malawi Aquaculture Project site. These containers contained equipment required for the construction of sustainable fish farming cages and had to be handled with care.

Handling the entire scope of transportation, FAMS booked the shipping vessel which carried the sea freight from Denmark to the port of Beira. Handling the ports customs clearance, FAMS cleared the cargo for further transport then took on the on-carriage transportation from the port. This is to say, FAMS transported the cargo as road freight all the way through Mozambique, into Malawi, and right up to our client’s door in Senga Bay, Salima.

Once there, the FAMS Malawi team also organized the use of a mobile crane to offload and position the container at the site, according to our clients wishes.

The Resolution

The consignment of equipment delivered to LM Aquaculture by FAMS will be used to build technologies which enable sustainable fish farming. This is the first step of one of the most strategic environmental and economic projects in Malawi, overseen by MITC.

The aim of this project is to produce a steady and sustainable supply of fish for the local Malawian, regional and international markets. Doing so will greatly assist in boosting the Malawian economy and provide new job positions for the local workforce. MITC predicts that this project will lead to over 300 new employment positions, quadruple the fish population within 3 years, lead Malawi into greater economic activity, agriculture commercialization and exports.

FAMS is proud of the Malawi division for securing this project. It is our hope that we will see a turn around on the critically endangered status of the Chambo. The FAMS team is sure to continue providing logistics solutions to our clients with a focus on environmental sustainability and economic assistance in the years to come.
